Keep in mind the point of a dust bath is to remove the excess oils from your chinchilla’s fur. The Chinchilla Sand, which looks a lot like sand on the beach, just can’t do that. It also damages the fur over time. You want to stick with the dust that looks like flour or powder. There really isn’t a best brand. Kaytee and SunSeed both make good dusts carried by pet stores. There is no reason you can’t switch them around.

He will try to mate. Females can get pregnant long before their bodies are large enough to safely deliver. You never want to house a female and male together until the female is at least 8 months old.

Is your chinchilla a Pink White (having reddish eyes and pink ears)? In guessing your chinchilla has beige in its background. All beige chinchillas get freckles on their ears as they grow up. Beige, Pink White, Brown Velvet, and any other color that has beige in its background will get these freckles. You'll notice more and more as your chinchilla grows.

It's ok to free-feed your chinchilla. Ours always have access to pellets and hay. If your chinchilla is skinny and you feel his bones easily he is probably not getting enough feed. I like to see a bit of food left in the cage when I go to feed the next time...But if your chinchilla is not skinny it may just be his genetics. Small chinchillas produce smaller chinchillas. Breeding a mutation color to another mutation instead of a standard will produce smaller chinchillas. No matter what they are fed, these chinchillas will never be as big as carefully bred larger chinchillas.
