We began breeding chinchillas because we truly love the animals. We started with just a few chinchillas and at our largest had alittle over 60. In the wild all chinchillas are gray and over the years breeders have produced new colors known as mutations. Most of our breeding pairs consist of a mutation color to a Standard Gray. It is a good idea to breed this way to keep good size and fur quality in the babies. We do have a few pairs that are both mutations to produce rarer colors such as Brown Velvet. In these pairing we have chosen mates that are of great size and quality.
Our females are separated from the males before they deliver to prevent them getting pregnant again right away. They stay apart for the entire time they are nursing (7-8 weeks). We then reintroduce the couple. If she gets pregnant right away we will give her a nice long break after weaning her next litter. This means our females tend to have 2 litters one year and only one litter the next. We don't have a large amount of babies born, but our females get lots of rest and time for their bodies to recuperate between pregnancies.
Our babies are loved and cuddled very often. We want them to know a human touch and bond well with a human owner. We wean our babies between 7-8 weeks. Runts may stay with Mom a bit longer. We then keep our babies here for another week to monitor their food & water intake and their personality to be sure they are ready to be on their own. Sometimes a baby can get depressed and needs a bit more time with the mother. Once we are sure the babies are happy, healthy, and friendly we send them off to their new loving homes.
Our chinchillas are our family. I know each one and love them for their own personalities. We do our best to ensure that our chinchillas are given the best and that our babies go to loving homes having the knowledge necessary to take care of their new pet. That is why each of our chinchillas is sold with a starter kit of food, hay, and my Chinchilla Care Booklet. I offer my help for any questions the family may have during the life of their pet through email or phone calls.
